Johann Zarco inside the top ten on day one in Catalunya

Johann Zarco : Team JiRJohann Zarco has had a strong first day on his Team JiR MotoBI machine by posting times close to some of his more experienced rivals in the Moto2 class.

The 21-year-old found himself in sixth position after the first practice session, but in the second session he could not improve, although times set later in the day were close to his earlier time and set on used tyres. Fastest today was the Swiss rider Thomas Luthi, who was half a second quicker than the second place man Pol Espargaro. Tonight Zarco and his team will be analysing the data to try and improve the MotoBI still further to get closer to the top five.

Final position: 9th

Best lap: 1m 47.756s

I feel quite good about today. This morning was a little difficult as you really have to make changes to your riding style to get the best times at Catalunya. Thankfully, this happened and we improved and at the last moment took sixth place which is not too bad, although we could see how very fast Thomas Luthi is! I wanted to close the gap a little more this afternoon, but we started with a used tyre and I found I could make comparable times on
this tyre while on my own, which was very positive. This has also given us some excellent information and data for how we start the race. Now I need to calm down, and go and talk to my mechanics to see how we can improve my MotoBI still further. My bike is so far working really well, but we never stop trying to improve the bike.

Top five classification after free practice:
1. Thomas LUTHI – 1’46.597
2. Pol ESPARGARO – 1’47.133 – 0.536
3. Scott REDDING – 1’47.171 – 0.574
4. Andrea IANNONE – 1’47.613 – 1.016
5. Alex DE ANGELIS – 1’47.629 – 1.032

9. Johann ZARCO – 1’47.756 – 1.159
