Travel Safety: Reducing Your Vulnerability
Most travelers are aware that tourists are popular prey for criminals and petty thieves. Few however take the proper precautions to protect themselves and their property during their travels. Increasingly, protecting yourself from pretty crime can also protect you from more serious crimes, such as identity theft.
Before you Leave
Make two photocopies of any valuable travel documents (tickets, passports, policies, etc). Pack one and leave the other with a contact person at home. Write down credit card numbers, traveler’s check numbers and other important information. Read your government’s travel advisories and warnings.
Travel light
Someone with a single, small bag is less likely to attract unwanted attention at a busy airport or a train station than someone struggling with several. The more difficult your movement, the more likely you are to become a target.
Dress the Part
Leave expensive jewelry, clothes and other luxury items at home; they make you look more attractive to would-be thieves.
Street Smarts
Avoid carrying money or valuables in handbags or outside pockets. Instead, strap a money belt around your waist under your clothes. Take only the money you plan to spend that day. Leave what you don’t need in the hotel safe. Don’t keep all your items together.
Stay Alert
Act like you know where you are going, even if you don’t. Walk with purpose and avoid anyone who attempts to engage you in conversation, like asking for directions. This is a common ploy to catch tourists off guard. Learn basic phrases in the local language in case you need help. Use common sense, and don’t travel alone at night.
Rental Cars and Trains
Subway stations are notorious for crime. Stay alert, especially at stops. Pickpockets tend to strike by rushing off the train with your property, so that by the time you react, the train has started moving again. Never sleep on a train, if possible.
Rental cars also attract thieves. Never leave valuables in the car or boot. Keep the glove compartment open so that prospective thieves can see that it’s empty. The best advice is to purchase reliable and protective travel insurance. Online companies like AA Travel are a good bet economically because they usually don’t charge as much as travel agents.
Following these simple precautions may not be foolproof, but they will increase your likelihood of enjoying a safe, worry-free holiday. Bon voyage!
