The Best Gelato in Rome
Italy’s capital boasts the best ice-cream parlours in the country. If you’re tired and hot after hours of site-seeing, there’s no better way to rest and revitalise than by kicking back with a delicious cold scoop in one of Rome’s ice-cream cafes, located on street corners from the Colosseum to the Vatican. Here are a few top-choice parlours to help you make sure you try the best creamy recipes and flavours that Rome has to offer.
Palazzo del Freddo Giovanni Fassi
Located west of the main station on via Principe Eugenio, this is the oldest and largest ice-cream parlour in Italy. From a wide fridge extending from one side of the café to the other, this airy, ice-cream haven serves up exceptionally cool and creamy scoops. With vintage parlour chairs, and decorated with honorary plaques and newspaper cuttings, the beautiful café is a tourist attraction in itself. Be sure to try the pistachio and strawberry flavoured scoops, the touted favourites of many passing tourists.
Giolitti
With cool and charming century-old marble and mirrors, this ice-cream parlour near the Pantheon on Via Uffici del Vicario 40 was founded in 1890 by Guiseppe and Bernardini Giolitti, and has since become world-renowned. It’s not cheap here, but it’s worth the money for the massive variety and superb quality of flavours. Not to be missed is the ‘semi-freddo al torroncino’, a runny pink ice-cream cake, and tourists should try as many of the weird and wonderful flavours that Giolitti has to offer, from champagne, to casata siciliana, amaretto, ricotta and even rice! Purported to have refused to sell his brand and recipes to large-scale commercial dairy companies, the attractiveness of Giolitti’s café is his ice-cream’s unspoilt uniqueness of taste.
San Crispino
Two blocks from the Trevi fountain, on the via della Panaterria 42, the owners of San Crispino believe that, unlike most other parlours, ice-cream should be served without cone, brioche or toppings, to maintain a purity of flavour. Tourists should try the ‘zabaione’, a custard made with masala reserve, as well as the house San Crispino Cream sweetened with honey. Be sure that you go here to take-away, since there is nowhere to sit, and be careful not to offend the owners by asking for a sample taste.
