SUZUKI CRUISE THE HIGHWAY WITH NEW
INTRUDER
 Suzuki's
voluptuous new 2001 custom bike, the VL800 Intruder Volusia,
cruised into Suzuki dealer showrooms earlier this month offering
a laid-back alternative to power hungry supersports bikes
at a very relaxed price of £4999.00 (£5349.00
on-the-road).
Named after Florida’s twice-yearly gathering place for
motorcycle enthusiasts, Volusia County, the VL800 continues
the Suzuki Intruder heritage of long, low traditional cruiser
styling. The 805cc liquid-cooled V-Twin engine is tuned for
torque at low rpm thus reducing the need for continuous gear
changing – just accelerate to 30 mph, slot into top gear
and enjoy the fun. The big 300mm front disc brake works with
a 180mm rear drum brake for quick and responsive stopping
and the progressive rear suspension, with classic rigid-tail
looks, provides a comfortable yet stable ride.
A five-speed, wide-ratio transmission with low-maintenance
shaft drive makes the Volusia a cinch to manoeuvre around
town and at 60mph the Suzuki ticks-over at just under 4000rpm
for stress-free cruising.
Suzuki engineers have stayed loyal to the custom theme with
the VL800. Its staggered dual exhaust systems delivers that
essential throaty roar and the sumptuous padded seat, set
at a low 700mm, sits a-top lashings of gleaming chrome. The
chunky tyres feature tall sidewalls for a more cushioned ride
and, the spoked wheels with chromed rims are surrounded by
expansive fenders resulting in a look that shouts cruiser.
The seating position, combined with forward-mounted foot-pegs
and foot controls, encourages the rider to settle back, relax
and cruise for miles.
Suzuki claims that its new VL800 Volusia is the perfect fit
for those seeking comfort and traditional styling with performance
to match. When you bring Suzuki’s comprehensive two-year
warranty package, twelve month’s AA roadside/at home
recovery and Alpha dot security marking into the equation,
then they may well have a point.
