ROYAL SUPPORT FOR SCARBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL BIKE WEEK

The ACU received exciting news last week when it was announced that the Duke of Edinburgh has accepted an invitation to attend one of the events during the 2003 Bike Week celebrations in Scarborough.

The week long motorcycle festivities also marks the Centenary Year of the Auto-Cycle Union, the governing body of motorcycle sport in the UK. The Duke of Edinburgh, as the patron of the ACU, was said to be delighted to accept the invitation to this prestigious event.

The Scarborough Bike Week is organised by the Auto 66 Club who are proud to be hosting a major event as part of the ACU Centenary celebrations. The festivities at Scarborough will take place from the 13th to 21st September and will see the Duke of Edinburgh visit on the final day for the 53rd International Gold Cup Road Races where he will present the prestigious Steve Henshaw International Gold Cup and meet the riders prior to the race.

In addition to road racing, Bike Week includes all aspects of motorcycling from the Vintage Festival of 1,000 Bikes, Beach Racing, Supermoto, Trials , Hill Climbs and Sprints and caters for everyone. There will be many social events and ride outs over the Yorkshire Moors and Yorkshire Wolds.

The ACU Chief Executive, Neil Hellings, comments on the Duke`s visit: “The ACU are thrilled that our patron, the Duke of Edinburgh, has accepted our invitation. He will be visiting one of our bigger Centenary events and we are confident Scarborough International Bike Week will be a great success.”

The ACU is looking at the forthcoming calendar and hoping to invite other high profile personalities to events to help promote the exciting sport of motorcycling in Great Britain.
