Superbike legends launch Kawasaki dealership on Isle of Man

A family firm with more than 45 years involvement in both the racing and selling of motorcycles has launched the Isle of Man’s only Kawasaki dealership.

Kawasaki Direct, based in Douglas, is run by the Padgett family – proud of their racing achievements and their combined knowledge of the world’s superbikes.

With four British Champions in the family and successes dating back to 1959, it is easy to see why the Padgetts are popular with Kawasaki – and their customers. The family have been motorbike dealers for more than 30 years and currently have two dealerships on mainland Britain – one a solus Kawasaki franchise.

Their new showroom in Douglas was launched last week – at the height of 2003 Manx Grand Prix fever.

Co-owner Clive Padgett, who succeeded the legendary Barry Sheene as prestigious 250cc Champion of Brands in 1978 said: “We are very proud of our history and the climax of our success was seeing superbike hero Mick Grant ride a Padgett Kawasaki into third place at the 1973 Manx Grand Prix. In those days the race was one of the most prestigious in the world and it was a great moment for us and Kawasaki to see our bike up there alongside Italy’s finest.”

Clive added: “We are happy for anyone to drop in and watch videos or chat with our General Manager Steve Hodgson – a former racer himself. Motorbikes are not just our business but our heritage.”

Kawasaki District Manager, Denis Matthewman said: “We are delighted to be able to boast that such a prestigious racing family as the Padgetts are promoting and selling Kawasaki bikes.

“The Isle of Man, of course, is a hub of motorcycling activity and we are confident that the Kawasaki Direct showroom in Douglas will attract a huge clientele – both during the TT and Manx Grand Prix seasons, and throughout the year.

“Customers to the showroom will not only benefit from the team’s wealth of knowledge about our bikes but will also enjoy a snapshot of racing history in chatting to Steve Hodgson.”
