The Motor Cycle Industry Association
The Motor Cycle Industry Association Ltd (MCI) is the UK’s only trade association for the non-retail sector of the motorcycle industry. It represents more than 140 members, including manufacturers and importers of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds and accessories, factors (wholesalers of motorcycle components and accessories), motorcycle marketing services companies, motorcycling organisations and companies allied to the motorcycle industry including motorcycle media and some larger dealers.
The Association offers a number of services and has a recently revamped website www.mcia.co.uk.
The MCI offers a wide range of services to its members and is active in the following areas:
Political Lobbying
MCI has its own public affairs department that takes a leading role in the promotion of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds and lobbies for their integration into transport plans. MCI is regularly consulted regarding motorcycling laws both nationally and locally. The association deals extensively with the workings of government legislation and has influenced a number of parliamentary bills. It is also represented on the government’s advisory group for motorcycling and works with The All-Party Parliamentary Motorcycle Group.
Public Relations
The Public Relations department promotes motorcycling and raises awareness about the social, environmental and economic benefits of using a powered two-wheeler. It is responsible for coordinating media campaigns, liaising with the press, organising events and promoting the activities of the Association.
Industry Statistics and Research
MCI is the primary source of motorcycle industry data and regularly publishes detailed statistics on issues such as new motorcycle registrations and the numbers of motorcycles in use. This data is distributed among its members and to the press.
Committees and Groups
MCI hosts a range of committees and interest groups to promote and represent its members. They include the Off Road Group, Motorcycle Safety Committee, Motorcycle Manufacturers and Importers Group, which looks at driving license provisions and new legislation among others and the Road Race Group, which promotes motorcycling sport and encourages wider participation.
