Panichi takes 2005 BMW PowerCup title

Panichi wins 2005 BMW PowerCup title
Roberto Panichi secured the 2005 BMW Motorrad PowerCup title and the keys to a brand new BMW 6 Series car at Brno in the Czech Republic on Sunday. The Italian’s podium finish in front of nearly 80,000 race fans on his BMW K1200 R puts the championship beyond the reach of his nearest challenger, Sebastian Legrelle, who was only able to finish in sixth place at the legendary circuit.

The whole weekend was completely dominated by Spaniard Arturo Tizon who took pole position and then won the race by almost four seconds over second-placed Rico Penzkofer from Germany. Panichi crossed the line in third position, which was enough to secure the inaugural BMW Motorrad PowerCup title, with one round still to go.

For Panichi it was a case of third time lucky, as two years of close competition in BMW’s renowned BoxerCup series gave the Italian race wins, but never the actual championship he so desired. But with podium finishes from five of six races so far this season (including race victories at Donington Park and Sachsenring) Panichi’s consistency has always made him the man to beat.

"I’m lucky to have actually finished this race because I made a massive mistake in the second corner when I missed a gear,” said Panichi. “I was so close to crashing but I must have had luck on my side! I was then drawn into following Rico Penzkofer when he passed me mid-race, but I had to think of the championship, so backed off accordingly. I’m so glad to have wrapped up the title today because there are two months before the next round at Valencia, so I can relax safe in the knowledge that I’m the 2005 PowerCup champion. The only thing I have to worry about is what colour I’m going to choose for the BMW 6 Series I have won!"

The final round of BMW Motorrad’s 2005 PowerCup series takes place at Valencia in Spain on 6 November, where it supports the MotoGP World Championship programme. Traditionally, this venue provides spectacular racing as well as one of the largest spectator attendances of the year.
