SUPERBIKE CHAMPION HELPS BRING ON NEW TALENT
Reigning British Superbike Champion Steve Hislop left a massive and lasting impression on young riders and parents alike at a recent ACU Academy training day. Virgin Mobile Yamaha star Hislop was invited to do some coaching and give some advice to some of the Academy`s young riders at their training day at Pembrey, South Wales.
Heavy rain overnight, followed by a find drizzle that lasted most of the morning, meant that track conditions were perfect for wet weather practice.
Hislop, fresh from his own wet weather antics at Knockhill had plenty of advice for the kids…
“You must be very smooth and relaxed” explained Steve, “If you are tense, waiting for the crash, then it will happen,” he continued.
In the afternoon the clouds parted and a flash of sunlight had steam rising from the track and a dry line in a matter of minutes. This gave some of the riders a chance to push that little bit harder, especially those like Yamaha R6 Cup racers Kieran Clarke and Oliver Bridewell who are not allowed to run full wet weather tyres.
Kieran was especially pleased to get some advice from Hislop,
“Steve has explained a lot to me about how to get out of slower corners on the R6. I am sure it will make all the difference next time we race in the wet” said Kieran.
One of the riders to most benefit from the help was Team UK1 Racings 125 prodigy, Jon Boy Lee. In his first season in the 125GP class, Jon Boy has struggled to get to grips with riding on wet weather racing tyres. During almost the whole of the morning session Steve watched and advised Jon Boy as he pushed progressively harder and harder, exploring the potential of the sticky Dunlop`s.
Some younger riders were also invited to train with the Academy regulars at Pembrey and most were completely star struck to be able to talk to and get advice from Steve.
Young Matthew Hoyle is only 12 years and races a Cagiva 80. The diminutive little racer is in his first season of road racing found the prospect of getting one to one advice from the British Superbike Champions rather exciting.
Matthew and the other young invited boys eagerly picked Hislop`s brain before each session and then rushed out onto track to put his words into practice.
The day ended at 5pm with a big round of applause from the riders and parents. There was no doubt that Steve had just gained a whole new set of fans and make an indelible mark on some young men. For the riders of the ACU Academy and the young guest riders, their Pembrey training day will be a day that they will remember for a long time.
As for Steve Hislop, he simply could not have done more to help the youngsters and the ACU is extremely grateful for the time and effort he put into the day.
If the mark of a true champion is how much he puts back into the sport, then Steve Hislop will be one of the greatest British Champions we have ever had.
