Middlesbrough
council have invested £5000 in secure parking facilities
for motorcycles after two years of persistent lobbying
from the local MAG group.
Using the example set by MAG-friendly councillors in the
West Midlands borough of Sandwell the Middlesborough Council
agreed that there was a need
for improved security.
The proposed secure parking areas were to be both the
Brentnall Car Park (Multi-storey) and the Zetland (Multi-storey)
but MAG in Middlesbrough insisted that the time and effort
should be spent on the Brentnall as nobody in their right
mind parks in the Zetland.
Car
Parks Manager Steve Webster was given a sketch by MAG
members who requested an area within the multi-storey
car park giving appropriate security to the bike parking
areas. Critical features included brick wall cover on
three sides, single ingress and egress facing an attendant's
office and a new CCTV solely for watching the area.
The restrains, modelled on the Sandwell are 'Groundforce
Series 3' parking frames and are now in place (photo).
Local MAG rep John Hughes:
This has been a great victory for MAG lobbying in Middlesbrough
and proves that the authorities do respond to persistent
and rational argument, MAG is all about freedom for bikers
and there's no freedom for any of us if our bikes are
stolen.
