MAG Theft Facts
Interim results from the Motorcycle Action Groups survey
of motorcycle and scooter theft "The Fear Factor"
are starting to give the organisation a clear understanding
about theft.
The survey lives up to its title as 71% of riders use
security for fear of theft and to protect their bikes.
Further data still to be analysed reveals that 61% of
riders have Comprehensive insurance while 38% have Third
Party Fire and Theft. (Only 3% have Third Party only).
75% of riders have more than 3 years no claims discount
(58% more than 5 years). When asked about security, 80%
stated that they have a garage, 90% use at least one security
device, 54% use two or more security devices (52% use
security tagging). In spite of all their care and attention
for their motorbikes, more than a third of those who had
their bikes stolen did not claim on their insurance.
They stated that they would have to pay excess & lose
their no claims-bonus and have higher premiums the following
years and some even stated that if they claimed would
make their address a higher insurance risk for their house
and car.
The police did not fair well in the survey, when asked
whether they reported the theft to the police, 89% of
theft victims stated that they had done so but 79% stated
that the police took no or very little action to recover
their bikes. In spite of this lack of action - 60% were
recovered.
These results conflict with the established picture of
motorcycle theft.
MAG seeks further data to see if the interim results represent
the true picture.
In the survey 97% of respondents stated that they had
motorbikes and 68% are aged between 26 and 45 years.
We need to hear more from scooter owners and younger bikers.
